A Chance to Win and 5 TIPS!

How about a little more fun with Double Wedding Ring?

And a chance to win the shape collection? OR a $40 Inklingo Gift Certificate?

You don’t have to be an expert quilter with a ton of patience to sew DWR anymore. Just print the shapes on fabric with Inklingo!

Today there are more Double Wedding Ring Quilt designs to inspire you and 5 tips to help you sew one.

This design has arcs with 8 pieces (plus ends). Impressive!

TIP 1  Use the unique pressing guide in the Double Wedding Ring Design Book to press the seams in the right direction—and to check the size of the arcs!

This is the same design with a few little tweaks. Approx 52 x 52 inches.

ON POINT SETTINGS

For me, the real magic happens when the blocks are turned on point.

This design is about 72 x 72.  Wouldn’t it look lovely on a bed with another row of DWR all the way around (96 x 96)?

TIP 2  Use the worksheets in the Double Wedding Ring Design Book OR the Double Wedding Ring Electric Quilt project file to find the finished size of your design.

Double Wedding Ring Quilts with an on-point design can be finished with a straight edge.

TIP 3 This half center is provided in two Inklingo layouts to print on fabric. Print the one with straight grain on the long side if you are using it on the outside edge of the quilt.

On-point with a medallion effect. Having a variety of centers with appropriate straight grain makes it possible.

This one uses the half center with straight grain on the long side.

TIP 4 You can put a Double Wedding Ring Border on any quilt! Had you thought of that?

All of the arcs in this one are identical, but . . .

. . .you can use more than one kind of arc in each quilt. So many choices!

I went with Russ to Niagara Falls NY yesterday to mail book orders. It was the perfect day to walk in Niagara-on-the-Lake too—without the weekend crowds. The spring flowers and blossoms are glorious right now. I came home inspired to try one more design.

I’ll call this one Blossoms in Niagara on the Lake.

If you compare these designs with ones in the two previous messages, I think you will see why I love on-point settings so much.

\

TIP 5 You can have 7 pieces (plus ends) in each arc by using two different sizes. That’s what I did for my blossoms design.

Inklingo Quiz – Just for Fun!

Yesterday was a beautiful spring day here. Russ and I had a movie date followed by a country drive. We used to go on country drives on Sunday afternoons when I was a kid.

Funny how the road led directly to Dairy Queen—my fave. Many things have changed since I was a kid, but ice cream is still the best.

I still had visions of Double Wedding Ring dancing in my head even after all of the Double Wedding Ring Quilt Designs I posted last time.

Are you traditional or not?

Inklingo makes many more Double Wedding Ring designs possible than quilters may have considered in the past.

We started yesterday morning with some non-traditional ones.

Of course, many quilters prefer something more traditional. Not everyone wants their quilts to look modern or different.

Today I start with a design with the more conventional arcs with 4 pieces (plus ends), but then I tweak it a bit too.

This might be what you think of when you picture DWR in your mind. It is traditionally done in 30′s pastels—by expert quilters.

With Inklingo, you can print the shapes on fabric and get beautiful results. You don’t have to be an expert with years and years of experience to make this one anymore!

Here it is again with a few plain arcs and without the points on the edges.

Plain arcs are re-arranged. Can we get a medallion effect?

The different Inklingo center that we used in the Double Wedding Ring Quilts yesterday makes the medallion effect more pronounced.

We can tweak this endlessly.

Should we add Inklingo arcs with 5 or 8 pieces too? Lots of choices.

Medallion quilts look great on a bed.

Another medallion variation. The arcs around the edges are the only ones with traditional pieced arcs.

Again, we can emphasize the medallion effect with different Inklingo center shapes.

No matter what design you choose, you know it will be easier to cut and sew when you print the shapes on fabric with Inklingo.

This on-point Double Wedding Ring is a combination of yesterday and today.

Chocolate or Vanilla?

Do you  prefer some of yesterday’s DWR designs or do you like your DWR to be more traditional?

Everyone doesn’t like the same thing.

That’s why they make chocolate and vanilla. Except at Dairy Queen—no chocolate! (Why, oh, why?)

The Double Wedding Ring Design Book ($10 or free) will help you decide.

Inklingo Quiz – Just for Fun!

I had an unusual complaint about Inklingo this week.

A quilter ‘complained’ that I don’t advertise enough. LOL

She spent her hard-earned money on another method of cutting DWR shapes before she heard about the Inklingo shapes to print on fabric.

DWR shapes have been available for over 3 years already but she did not learn about them until it was too late.

It was obvious to her at a glance that if she prints the shapes on fabric with Inklingo, it is easier to cut and sew a beautiful quilt—and that was even before she realized a few things:

  • that she could rotary cut several layers at a time
  • the many design options for the arcs and the centers
  • that she could fussy cut with Inklingo
  • that Inklingo provides Combo layouts to save fabric and time
  • the unique pressing guide ensures perfect results
  • and on and on. . .

Monkey and I take all ‘complaints’ seriously, so I am working on one of our little YouTube movies about DWR now.

In the meantime, I am sharing a few of the more than 50 Double Wedding Ring Quilts I have designed for our ‘ad.’

One piece arc (plus two end shapes). Make flowers!

Yes, you can “fussy cut” with Inklingo!

Inklingo provides a choice of centers for even more options!

Several of my Double Wedding Ring designs have a medallion effect, thanks to the choice of Inklingo center shapes.

When I turn the shapes on-point, I can finish with a straight edge.

Borders and medallions are favorites!

Queen size 85 x 94

Rings of color can make a Double Wedding Ring Quilt glow.

Other half centers can be used to create a ribbon effect or weaving.

The choice of centers is a wonderful feature of Inklingo!

The Double Wedding Ring Quilt Design Book will also be featured in the movie, but if you can’t wait, you can order and download it now—$10 or free.

We can help!

Any time you hear quilters talking about making a Double Wedding Ring Quilt, please tell them about

Can you help?

Please tell your friends about Inklingo before they end up with a DWR UFO. There are so many ways to do it!

More to come!

Did you notice that none of the quilts today use the traditional multi-piece arcs?

We have plenty of traditional designs to share, and we’ll add some with 4, 5, and 8 pieces soon. Oh, and Pickle Dish too!

That’s all we can do today. I apologize for being so poor at advertising. It’s back to work for me!

I hope you enjoy these designs. Do you have a fave?

Inklingo Quiz – Just for Fun!

I prepared a few layouts in Electric Quilt to get you started with the new 2 and 4 inch 60° Triangles from Inklingo.

There are also dozens of worksheets in the shape collection itself. We showed a few pretty quilt designs yesterday but if you have EQ, it’s easy to design more!

Set the Size

No matter what approach you take, you must set the size according to the dimensions in the Inklingo shape collection:

  • 2 inch 60° Triangles are 1.73 inches high and 2 inches wide.
  • 4 inch 60° Triangles are 3.46 inches high and 4 inches wide.
There are at least two ways to set up the worktable. As usual, EQ gives you lots of options, so these are just suggestions.

1. Worktable > Work on Quilt > Quilt > New Quilt > One-patch Quilt > Layout > Triangles

This design uses 2 and 4 inch 60° Triangles—both sizes.

There must be a way to set two sizes of triangles in EQ. I haven’t figured that out yet, so I colored with black so the lines dividing into small diamonds would not show. All of the 4 inch triangles are black.

This one looks like an envelope to me.

The colors remind me of the old Hudson’s Bay blankets.

You could make this with any of the sizes listed in the Inklingo Index of Shapes.

2. Worktable > Work on Quilt > Quilt > New Quilt > One-patch Quilt > Layout > Lightning

That’s how I got the zig zag effect above.

Download the free EQ Project File

There are more quilts in the project file, but it is still only the tip of the iceberg. It should be enough to get you started.

(All of the files are identical.)
.
.
You know that whatever you design in EQ will be easy to cut and sew when you print the shapes on fabric with Inklingo—no templates, no measuring, no weird rulers, AND a line to cut on, a line to sew on!

What’s next?

There are more quilt designs in the forecast. If you are subscribed to the blog, you will receive an email when the next ones are ready.

This is a good time to order and download 2 and 4 inch 60° Triangles. The introductory sale price expires soon, okay?

Enjoy!

Inklingo Quiz – Just for Fun!

60 Degree Triangle Quilts

There are more than two dozen quilt and border designs in the new Inklingo shape collection for 60° Triangles.

Here are a few of them—plus a little tip about printing Custom Page Sizes.

Triangles and Half Triangles Only

This one uses 2 and 4 inch Triangles.

60° Triangles make fantastic borders.

Zig Zags are okay too!

With Hexagons

60° shapes are perfect for 6 pointed stars. This design uses Inklingo 60° Hexagons 2 inch with the 2 and 4 inch triangles.

I wonder if I should have reversed the colors on this one. It also uses Inklingo 60° Hexagons 2 inch with the 2 and 4 inch triangles.

Stars of Stars. Irresistible?

With Diamonds

The 60° Half  Triangles are more versatile than you might think because they turn hexagons into rectangular blocks for a setting like this.

With Inklingo, the diamonds are a great portable project, but then you can add the triangles by machine and assemble the quilt top quickly. We think that is “the best of both worlds.”

This is the same as the blue example except that every other row is dropped by a half block.

Inklingo gives you a choice of straight grain on the half triangles—either on the two short sides (used above) or on the long side.

Tip for Saving Fabric and Saving Time

Yesterday I had a question about the Suggested Custom Sizes in each shape collection and how exact they are.

Custom Page Sizes use fabric efficiently!

When I create the suggested custom layouts (example below), I allow margins of 0.25 inch on the top and sides, and 0.5 inch on the bottom. (Almost all Inkjet printers use those margins.)

There is a note about saving fabric (and freezer paper) in the first chapter of The Inklingo Handbook because almost all Inkjet printers allow you to set the custom size to 2 decimal places. This is what it says on page H45 of the free shape collection:

“You may be able to save a little bit of fabric by testing and refining the dimensions given in the suggested cutting layouts. For example, the suggested custom paper size may be listed as 5.75 x 9.25 but when you test, you may find that you can print on a sheet 5.55 x 9.1. The test page can be used as a template to cut more FP without precise measuring, and the FP can even be approximate, as long as the dimensions in the print dialog box are correct.”

What it means: It is a good idea to print on scrap paper first—just in case. You might not mind a few partial lines at the edges if it allows you to use a smaller scrap of freezer paper or fabric.

When you print your first custom page size, you can follow the step-by-step guide under the Support tab on the website. All you need to do is enter the dimensions in a print dialog box. It’s simple, so you will only need it the first time.

The Easy Way to Print on Fabric

Inklingo is really as simple as finding the page of shapes in the PDF and printing, but there are little refinements like custom page sizes in the handbook. That is why the first chapter is included in the free shape collection for Diamonds/Triangles/Squares.

Have you looked at pages H5 to H48 of the free shape collection yet? It has everything you need to know about printing on fabric plus photos of Monkey.

There is also a neat tip about making large sheets of freezer paper from your odd scraps in the handbook on page H41, but I’ll let you find that one yourself, okay?

I hope you are subscribed, so you won’t miss our next message about 60° Triangles because there’s a free project file to use with Electric Quilt and more quilt designs!

Thanks for visiting today.
