I often recommend that quilters start hand piecing with Quilted Diamonds 2 (the second book) because it is so easy to learn from the demonstrations on the DVD.  Each book is $29.95 but QD2 includes a two-hour hand piecing lesson on DVD, for the same price.  You can compare the contents of the two books and see sample pages of each using the links here.

Jane Austen's Writing Table Quilts

The first book has chapters on appliqué, quilting designs and scalloped bindings that are not included in QD2 and there are also detailed, illustrated instructions on hand piecing. 

When I wrote the second book, I designed the diamonds based on what I wanted to teach, and to complement the script for the DVD lesson.  The diamonds are different (209 in QD, 101 in QD2) and QD2 shows many different fabric combinations. 

If you have Electric Quilt software (EQ4, EQ5 or EQ6), you may want to add the optional CDs of patterns, at $10.00 each, so you can print the QD patterns, instead of tracing.  The QD CDs are not sold without the related book.

Jane Austen's Writing Table quilts are very nice small projects and any of the diamonds in QD1 and QD2 are compatible with the settings too. I made this DVD especially for those people who wanted more detail on continuous stitching, pressing and trimming.  When I teach in person those are the "hot topics."
